144, Lot: 288. Estimate $100. Sold for $133. Vespasian. AD 69-79. Æ Dupondius (29mm, 12.15 g). Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Struck AD 72-73. Obv: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS III, radiate head right, small globe at point of bust Rev: FORTVNAE REDVCI S-C, Fortuna standing left, holding branch & rudder in right hand, cornucopiae in left. CNG attributed this to RIC II [1962] 739, (IMP CAESAR VESPASIAN AVG COS IIII); BMCRE 815 note; Cohen 194 [IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS IIII]. However, the legend on this coin is obscured so much that it's not possible to be sure of COS III vs COS IIII, and the Cohen 194 type does not appear in the new RIC 2.1 [2008], so, if this coin is in fact COS IIII, it's not listed. However, I find RIC 2.1 #1139, Cohen 191, matches in all other regards, so I'm calling it that. -ds VF, dark green, almost black patina, surfaces a little rough, high relief portrait.
