Septimius Severus AE14 from Nicaea in Bithynia. Two-handled vase containing two palm branches. Not in RecGen, von Aulock, Lindgren, Winsemann, Falghera or Righetti. A similar vase but empty and with a palm branch in the exergue is labeled "The Sacred Contest" on a coin of Commodus at Nicaea, RecGEn, Plate LXXV, #14. Crowded flan with letters squished together. see RecGen p. 460, #489 for the same reverse but on a coin of Caracalla (Plate LXXIX, #29). If such a vase never occurs in connection with an explicit agonistic legend, I would not consider it an agonistic type; although if it has palms emerging from it, then it may be. 1.59 grams, 14mm. Contributed by John Noory, August, 2003.
