Marcus Aurelius AR Denarius. Dated 161 AD. Obv: IMP CAES M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG, bare head right Rev: FEL TEM TR P XV COS III, Felicitas standing left holding winged caduceus and cornucopiae. Variety of RIC 12 (bare head, but IMP M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG) and RIC 13 (this obverse legend, but laureate head); both 12 & 13 have FEL TEMP on the reverse. Variety of RSC 197b (correct bust and legend, but FEL TEMP on the reverse.) [this coin has a relatively old-looking portrait for Marcus' first year as Augustus. The clumsy rendering of the caduceus, which looks a lot like corn ears, and the other unusual aspects of this example make me suspicious that it's not an official issue. -D.Surber] Contributed by Dane for George Clegg (biggyg2), October 2007
