Elagabalus, AE of Edessa, Mesopotamia. Obv: AVTO KAIC MAP AVP ANT, radiate head of Elagabalus left. Rev. KOLW MAP EDECCA, veiled and turreted bust of Tyche left. Babelon 43; SNG Cop 213. (Note: Some people may think that this coin is one of Caracalla, but he made Edessa a colony only a few weeks before he was killed, and so it is unlikely that any coins were struck with such a young-looking Caracalla and the KOLW (Colony) reverse legend. Babelon and other numismatic scholars agree that these coins were struck by Elagabalus who issued a large number of coins from Edessa. Used with permission of Trionfo-Jerusalem, March 2012.
