Elagabalus, Rome, Dupondius. 9.62 g, 25 mm. 220 AD. IMP CAES M AVR ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind P M TR P III COS III P P / S-C, radiate Sol standing left, raising right hand and holding whip. Note: No star in field. RIC IV-II, 301 var. Unlisted, Very Rare Three examples of this coin are now known, one from the the multi-coin lot 2453 in the 1935 Trau Sale in Vienna (Vienna 70169), one in Curtis Clay's collection (from the same dies) and Mark's. Note the absence of star in field, not in RIC for coins of 220 AD: clearly one of the earliest issues of the year. This is confirmed by the fact that the same type was used on denarii in the final issue of the preceding year, with TR P II. Contributed by Mark Zema, Aug. 2010.
