Domitian, as Caesar, AR Denarius. AD 80. CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS COS VII, laureate head right. PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS, clasped hands holding a legionary eagle on prow. RSC 395 (Titus); RIC 96 (ditto); BMCRE 85 (ditto); Paris 71 (ditto) (this coin). Note: Many sellers mistake RIC 1081 (struck under Vespasian) for this coin. RIC 1081 (Vesp.) has the obverse legend ending COS VI, not COS II, as on this coin. Of five such coins on coinarchivespro with legible obv. legends, all five of them were RIC 1081 types, but described as RIC 96. The two coins previously here on wildwinds as RIC 96 were also RIC 1081. Because of the scarcity of this coin, RIC 96, despite it being rated C (Common) in RIC, I was unable to find an example online. The image shown is the Paris example from the plate in RIC II.
