Ancient Coinage of Troas, Abydos

Abydos is on the coast of the narrowest point of the Hellespont. According to legend, Leander used to swim across the straits to Sestos every night to be with his lover, Hero. He drowned in a storm. The historically most important crossing was made by Xerxes who, in 480 BC, built a bridge of 674 rafts to invade Greece. Because the ruins of Abydos were scavenged for building materials from the 14th to the 19th century, there are practically no remains of the town left today.
