Temenothyrae, Phrygia. AE43, semi-autonomous issue, AD 244-249. Magistrate Aroun Neikomachos. 40.77 g. IERA CYNKLHTOC, draped bust of the Senate left. AROYN NEIKOMAXOC ARXIEREYC ARX A TO B THMENOQREYCI, Herakles, naked, standing left, holding torch and club and with lionskin over left arm, pointing the torch at a small Eros (often mistaken for the Hydra) at lower left. In the background to left is a tall column surmounted by a statue of Athena. BMC 12; Hunter 1-2; Kurth Herakles 206. With permission of Numismatik Naumann Auction 80, Lot 391, Aug 2019. Note: This reverse image does not show Herakles attacking the Hydra, as many sellers believe, but the known scene of Herakles and a small Eros, which (with a second Eros to right) attempted to capture Herakles by wrapping a rope around his legs. The scene is known from a coin from Pautalia struck for Antoninus Pius. The BMC catalogue correctly describes the reverse with "a small winged Eros left, pulls a taut rope apparently attached to the right leg of Herakles."
