Philetairos, King of Pergamum, Mysia, AE29, struck by Attalus II, 159-138 BC. Obv: Bearded head of Zeus left. Rev: FILETAIROY, Athena seated left, resting left elbow on a shield at her side and crowning the late king's name with a wreath in right hand, transverse spear on her right side, A on Phi beneath Athena's right arm, stylis in outer left field, bow in upper right field. Attalus II is the only Pergamene king on whose coins one sees a stylis in the left field, but this coin, in bronze and with bust left, is not in BMC, Munich, Tübingen, SNG Cop, Mionnet, Weisser, von Fritze, Imhoof, Paris etc. Probably unpublished. This coin may have been struck in connection with the great Altar of Pergamum, dedicated to Zeus and Athena, erected by Eumenes II, the father of Attalus II, to commemorate Pergamum's victory over the Celts by Attalos I.
