Ancient Coinage of Messenia, Mothone

Mothone (Meothone, Modon) was a town on a rocky islet at the SW tip of the Messenian peninsula. Ancient blocks, part of the foundation of the bridge which provides the only approach from the land side, are still visible. An acropolis was 2 km to the east. Beside a very small issue of civic coins, the town struck coins only for the Severans.
