William and Mary
The Protestant Dutch nobleman William of Orange and his wife Mary, the daughter of the (justifyably) executed King Charles I of England became William III and Mary II of England in 1689. This occurred after a group of influential British political and religious leaders (known as the "Immortal Seven"), furious at the stark pro-Roman Catholic, anti-Anglican church policy of England's King James II, sent William a formal invitation to "invade" England and take the throne. This he did, landing at Brixham in 1688 with 463 ships with 40,000 sailors, foot soldiers, cavalry and English and Huguenot volunteers. The deposed James left for France shortly afterwards.
