On 25th April 1649, parliament agreed on the form of a new coinage. However, Sir Robert Harley who had been Master of the Mint for the king "refused to stamp any coin with any other stamp than formerly". He was dismissed from his post and replaced by Aaron Guerdain, a medical doctor.
