Silver Nomos, Scarce Obverse: Three-quarter facing head of Hera Lakinia, wearing stephane richly adorned with honeysuckle ornament and griffins' heads. Reverse: Greek legends; Herakles naked seated left on rock covered with a lion's skin, holding wine cup; in field above, bow and club crossed. Condition: Nice VF; Coin is much better than the picture. It has excellent smooth light silver metal. Decent centering and strike for the issue. Decent detail for the issue with a nice nose and great lips. The obverse is slightly weak at the stephane high point as are most others in this issue. Raised portion of crude flan at left on obverse does not significantly detract. Overall, the coin is a very nice example of this scarce issue. Valuation: Why Valuation? Comparing this coin to the other similar types in CNG and Triton catalogs, I found a single example of this coin, lot 73. Another coin I found is a different variety with a legend on the obverse, lot 168. In Triton IV, lot 73, there is a toned, good VF, with a slightly double struck reverse. It was estimated at $2,500. The coin on auction seems to be less crude and have better metal quality than Lot 73. Lot 73 has a slightly more detailed stephane while the coin at auction has better lips and chin. Lot 73 has a better centered, but cruder reverse. In Triton I, lot 168, a near VF was estimated at $500 and sold for $650 + 10 % for a total of $715. Lot 168 has much more wear causing the nose and lips to merge. Sear 378 places an estimate of 750 pounds or $1125 for a VF condition coin. All in all, the coin at auction has the best lips and surfaces of the examples. This is a very attractive example of this scarce Greek coin. Size: 7.74 grams, die axis=6, flan 3.8 mm thick, 20.5 mm in diameter. References: Sear 474 variety, Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum American Numismatic Society 378 variety.
