RIC 30 LICINIUS II, Caesar 317-324 A.D. -- In 308, Galerius, then the senior co-Emperor, demoted Constantine from Augustus to Caesar, and promoted his friend Licinius to Augustus, even though Licinius had never held the title of Caesar. An uneasy peace followed, partly because Licinius I enhanced his position by marrying Constantine's sister. Their son, though but an infant, was proclaimed as Licinius II, Caesar, in 317, so that Constantine's sons could also attain that rank. Eventually, the peace between Licinius and Constantine collapsed, and after battles involving 300,000 men, Licinius I was defeated in 324, and later executed by Constantine. Even the young ex-Caesar was not spared, becoming a victim of the executioner at the age of 9.
