He was charged with subduing pirates operating there, but his novel approach of hiring ex-pirates as sailors, and paying them with captured loot provoked Emperor Maximian to condemn him to death. Carausius, ever resourceful, seized the fleet and took it to Britain, where he was welcomed as a liberator, and as a self-proclaimed Augustus. With the Channel as his defense, he was able to stay in power despite the best efforts of Rome, and was overthrown only by the treachery of one of his own Ministers, Allectus.
