Good VF, green patina. Estimate $150. Anastasius, who revolutionized the Roman monetary system with his coinage reform of 498 AD, made another major change circa 512, when he introduced the large-module follis of 16-20 grams weight and approximately 35mm in diameter. Like its smaller predecessor, the large-module follis was valued at 40 small bronze nummi and clearly marked on the reverse with the Greek numeral M--40. It was also valued at 1/180th of a gold solidus and 1/15th of a silver miliarense. It was the largest, most impressive Roman bronze coin to be issued since the sestertius of four centuries earlier, and must have been a major step in restoring confidence in the economy of the Eastern Roman Empire.
