Rubrius Dossenus. Ca. AD 107. AR denarius (3.36 gm). ROMAN EMPIRE. Restoration coinage of Trajan: L. Rubrius Dossenus. Silver denarius (3.36 gm). Rome, ca. AD 107. DOSSEN, laureate head of Jupiter right, scepter behind / [L R]VBRI in exergue, [IMP CAES T]RAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST around, tensa (ceremonial chariot in circus procession) drawn right by four horses, eagle standing right on side panel, statuette of Victory bearing wreath and palm attached to wagon rim. BMCRE 676 var. RIC 777 (R3). Komnick V.12.0, pl. 24 (same dies). Very rare and important. Extremely fine Trajan's restoration of this Republican denarius of 87 BC (Crawford 348/1) was apparently issued in connection with his great recoinage of the Republican and early imperial denarii in circulation, ca. 107 AD. This type is known to H. Komnick, Die Restitutionsmünzen der frühen Kaiserzeit (Berlin 2001), in only four specimens, from one obverse and two reverse dies. Of the two recorded reverse dies, that used for the present specimen, showing an eagle instead of a thunderbolt on the chariot's side panel, is known to Komnick from a single coin in Berlin. The tensa on these coins is erroneously called a triumphal quadriga by Crawford, followed by Komnick. For the correct identification as tensa, which is, in fact, the traditional one, see C. Clay, "Münzprägung des Kaisers Nero," NZ 96 (1982), p. 28, note 76. Estimated Value: $ 2,500 ...Sold for $6,500 USD [ approx 4940 EUR, 3445 GBP ] plus 15% buyers fee.
