Pompeius for your consideration. This sought after coin was minted in Rome in 137 BC and survives in about very fine condition and exhibits a gorgeous luster. This overall grade takes into consideration the rough surface of the obverse. Our photo doesn't convey the beautiful luster so apparent when viewing this coin in person. Of particular interest is the fact that this coin features a rare scene of the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, commemorating the founding of Rome. This scene is certainly among the most important historic images to appear on Republican period coinage. This coin also features a large portrait of a helmeted Roma, the goddess of the city and people of Rome. She was originally only recognized in the eastern provinces where her cult was established in the second century BC and was closely associated with the cult of Zeus. Roma was not actually worshiped in Rome until the time of Hadrian who built a temple dedicated to Roma Aeterna on the north side of the Sacra Via ( sacred street) which was the oldest and best known street in Rome.
