Description Barry & Darling Ancient Coins http://www.ancient-times.com [Image] Republic Pompeia 1 Denarius (c. 137 BC) Attribution: Moneyer Sex. Pompeius Fostlus (Pompeia 1), minted c. 137 BC Obverse : Head of Roma right, 'X' under chin, jug behind. Reverse : 'SEX. POM. FOSTLVS' Wolf right sickling the twins Romulus and Remus, shepard on left, birds in fig tree behind. 'ROMA' in exergue. Grade : F/F Notes : This coin comes from a plebian family who claimed to have been descended from Faustulus, the royal shepard to Aumilius, who found the she wolf and twins. According to legend, the twins were found at the foot of the Palatine after the cradle that carried them down the Tiber overturned at the foot of a fig tree. Other than a slight mark on the face of Roma, this coin this coin has no real problems other than normal wear and a slightly small flan. A nice example of a Roman story telling coin. GOOD LUCK!
