Description This piece was minted circa 137 BC under the authority of the moneyer Sex. Pompeius Fostlus. The obverse type depicts the head of Roma facing right, jug behind, X below chin. The reverse features she-wolf right, suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, with shepherd at left, birds on fig tree behind, with ROMA in the exergue. The reverse type legends read SEX.POM.FOSTLVS. This family was of plebian origin, and it would appear that they claimed descent from Faustulus, the royal shepherd of Amulius, who found the twins suckled by the wolf at the foot of the Palatine, the cradle in which they had been borne down the Tiber having overturned under a fig tree. Coin shows a few obverse banker's marks, but otherwise grades F, with clear devices and legends where struck up. A nice example of this scarcer type, catalouged as Pompeia 1. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders over $20. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit my WWW site at www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
