Description This piece was minted circa 75 BC, under the authority of the moneyer Cn. Egnatius Cn.f.Cn.n.Maxsumus. The Egnatia gens was of Samnite origin, and does not appear to have moved to Rome until after the Social War. This moneyer was a man of somewhat disreputable character who was admitted to the Senate but later expelled. No satisfactory explanation of the types has been suggested. The obverse of this type depicts the draped bust of Liberty facing right, with cap and MAXSVMVS behind. The reverse features Roma and Venus standing facing, the latter caressed by Cupid, oar on prow at either side, with the ligatured legends C.EGNATVS.CN.F. in the exergue, CN.N. on the right, and a variable letter at left. This piece is struck on a smallish flan, but otherwise grades a nice F+, with clear devices and legends where struck up. A nice example of this rare type, catalouged as Egnatia 2a, and listed in RSC at 110 Pounds. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders over $20. Member ANA, PAN.
