Roman Republic, Silver Denarius Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right, (XVI) monogram below chin; ROMA behind. Reverse: Macedonian shield with elephant's head at center, M METELLVS Q F around, all within laurel wreath. The son of Q. Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus, who defeated the Macedonian pretender Andriscus in 148 BC.; this is an early example of a moneyer commemorating his family history on coinage. Condition: Near EF, Picture is accurate. Remember that this is a large picture and shows everything, and the coin still looks great. The actual coin has more luster. Coin is very attractive for the issue. It has surfaces of good metal with a light medium silver color, with darker areas in the recesses. Centering is excellent. Reverse centering has full legend. Good detail on both sides. All in all, an extremely nice example of this coin. Valuation: Why Valuation? There was a VF in CNG 45, lot 1581, estimated at $125 and sold for $140 + 10%. Another VF in CNG 46, lot 1018, estimated at $125 and sold for $135 + 10%.This coin is much better than both of those examples, especially the obverse. The most current price information is found in Sear Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, where it is valued at $88 in VF and $256 in EF.
