Gemini III, January 9th, 2007 Lot # 287 - Auction is closed.Estimate: US$1000 / Price Realized: US$600 Anonymous. Gallic Knife. Denarius Anonymous. Gallic Knife. Denarius (4.23 gm). Uncertain Mint, 211-208 BC. Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind / The Dioscuri galloping right, curved Gallic knife below horses, ROMA in exergue. Crawford 109/1. Sydenham 165. Extremely fine. Cf. NAC 23, 1324, same obverse die. The NAC cataloguer described their coin as a unique example of a new issue, and the lot realized CH 6,000 plus commission. The present coin and the NAC specimen indeed differ in some stylistic particulars from “normal” examples of Crawford 109/1, but the anomalies can reasonably be ascribed to the vagaries of die engraving, and transitional examples exist (cf. Kestner1253-56). Nonetheless, this is an ususual and attractive variety of a rare coin. © 2006 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
