Description [Image] [Image] Roman Republic, Quadrigatus-Didrachm, 215-213 BC. Silver Quadrigatus-Didrachm, Scarce Obverse: Laureate broad head of Janus with side curls separated; on top of head, two small annulets. Reverse: Jupiter hurling thunderbolt and holding sceptre; behind him Victory; in fast quadriga right; below ROMA in raised letters in linear frame having left side slanted and right side verticle. Condition: Near EF, Coin at auction is much, much better than picture. This coin has excellent surfaces with smooth lustrous medium silver metal. The reverse has iridescent blue toning in the field surrounding the horses. The obverse is very well centered and the reverse slightly off center but losing little. Reverse is sharply struck for the sceptre, horses, quadriga and ROMA with a softer strike of Jupiter and Victory. Obverse is a very nice style for this issue which generally has an inferior style. The coin has little wear but has some weakness in the high points, which keeps me from calling it an EF. This is a very attractive example of this coin. Valuation: Why Valuation? The good style, sharp detail, good surfaces and minimal wear of the coin at auction make it a very desirable example of this coin. It has very attractive and realistic portrait of Janus. The coin does not have a lot of wear, but the weak strike on the obverse keeps me from calling it an EF. Sydenham rates the coin as scarce. Sear Millennium values it at $360 in VF and $880 in EF. Size: 6.20 grams; die axis = 0.0; 2.5 mm thick; flan 21.0 mm diameter. References: Sydenham 65; Crawford 28/3; RSC 24; Sear Mill. 33. All coins have a 14 day return privilege, no questions asked.
