Vespasian, 69-79, AE 18 of Ascalon in Judaea, F. SNG ANS 6 (Palestine-South
Arabia) 688-691. Obv. Laureate bust right. Rev. Phanebal standing facing,
holding sword and shield, The coin is dark brown, with some yellowish
color. The portrait and reverse image are well struck, but the legends aare
worn. Vespasian was appointed by Nero in 66 to quell the rebellion in
Palestine, and during the civil wars that followed Nero's murder Vespasian
was proclaimed emperor by the legions in Alexandria, and he outlasted his
rivals to become sole ruler.
