Severus Alexander, AR denarius. AD 231-235. Antioch mint IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right. VIRTVS AVG, Virtus standing left holding Victory and reversed spear. RIC 182 var (obv legend); Sear -. Contributed by Martin Griffiths, 2005. Notes from a Severus Alexander specialist: This obverse legend IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG is from the first RIC group of coins, AD 222-228. The child portrait confirms that it belongs with this first group of coins. I would think it is more important to have this coin listed with the early coins AD 222-228 than to have it out of order chronologically. Listing it as "RIC 182 var." will place it with the early group of coins where it belongs, and the "var." will alert the viewer that this is not RIC 182, but still belongs at this place in the listing.
