[RIC 2715]
Libius Severus III, 461-465 AD.
Libius Severus III, emperor of the Western Empire. AD 461–465. Died 15.8.465 probably of natural causes. A former Senator, Severus, supported by the army commander Ricimer, (after the latter had killed Majorian), was elected Emperor by the Senate in Ravenna, although neither Leo I (the Eastern Emperor) nor the provincial governers of the West recognised his title. Ricimer retained the actual power, his barbaric origins preventing him from becoming emperor himself. Some AE coins issued in Severus' name bear the monogram of Ricimer. References depend on legend breaks.
