This piece was minted between 198 and 202 AD, during the reign of Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193-211 AD. Septimius Severus was one of three provincial governors who answered the call of an outraged public to oust the shamefully elected Didius Julianus, who literally had bought the throne in an auction. He was first to arrive in Rome, and easily dispensed with the deserted Julianus, who was beheaded in his palace. He then dealt with the forces of the other two governors, and became master of the Roman world. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, with legends L.SEPT.SEV.AVG.IMP.XI.PART.MAX. The reverse type features Victory flying left, draping garland over a shield set on a low base, with legends VICTORIAE.AVGG.FEL. Coin shows some surface granularity, but otherwise grades AVF< with clear devices and legends, and a well detailed portrait. A nice example of the type, Ref: RSC-719.
