Septimius Severus (AD 193–211). AV aureus (7.23 gm), AD 
196. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Septimius 
Severus right / ADVENTVI AVG FELI—CISSIMO, Severus on 
horseback right, right hand raised, conducted by 
soldier. Cf. BMCRE 150, RIC 73, C. 5, RCTV 6186, and 
Hill 237 (laureate bust, drapery on left shoulder). 
Possibly an unpublished variant, very rare thus. A few 
edge marks. Nearly extremely fine
The reverse type celebrates Severus’ return to Rome 
after his eastern campaigns against Pescennius Niger and 
his Parthian supporters, in preparation for a 
confrontation with Clodius Albinus.
