Very rare: only four other specimens, from two obverse and two reverse dies, known to C. Clay. Pleasing extremely fine Towards the middle of 195 Septimius declared himself to be the son of Marcus Aurelius and his official titulature thereafter included a list of divine imperial ancestors from Divus Marcus all the way back to Divus Nerva. On the coins, however, the only record of this "self-adoption" is the appearance of the title "Son of the Deified Marcus Aurelius" on very rare aurei like the present coin as well as on rare sestertii and dupondii struck in 195 and on the New Year's issue of bronze medallions for 196.
