Freeman & Sear - Gemini I, Session 2 Lot: 430 ROMAN EMPIRE. Salonina (wife of Gallienus). Orichalcum sestertius (19.05 gm). Rome, ca. AD 262. CORNELIA SALONINA [AV]G, draped bust right, wearing stephane / [PVD]I[CITIA] S C, Pudicitia standing left, raising veil and holding transverse scepter. Göbl 490y, pl. 42 (this coin). Cf. Cohen 93 and RIC 51 (asses). Apparently unique as a sestertius. Dark green patina. Somewhat smoothed, otherwise very fine Ex Credit Suisse 4, 1985, lot 604 (the same coin quoted and illustrated by Göbl). The regular production of bronze coins ended ca. AD 263. According to Göbl, this is the last sestertius type struck at Rome for Salonina. The obverse die is shared by a sestertius with the reverse PIETAS AVGG S C, depicting Pietas seated with three children (Göbl pl. 22, 230d(2)), from late in Gallienus' joint reign with Valerian. The same obverse die was used also for silver and bronze medallions of Salonina with the reverse legend AEQVITAS PVBLICA, showing the three Monetae (Göbl pl. 29, 314-315).
