Salonina, AE Antoninianus, Rome mint. Struck: 267-268 AD 3.28g, 20.4mm COR SALONINA AVG, Diademed and draped bust right, resting on crescent IVNONI CONS AVG, doe walking left. (Delta in ex.) RIC 16, Göbl 725x, Sear 10643 The animal on this coin does not have the swept-back antlers and long head of the bearded elk type. It is probably the type which RIC describes as a doe. This particular example is used by courtesy of the Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery in Glasgow. The huge collection of coins in the Hunterian museum is well worth a visit for anyone visiting Glasgow. Their collection of Greek coins has been published in three volumes which are available as reprints from Elibron Classics.
