Governor of Syria at the time of Pertinax' assassination, Niger was proclaimed emperor by his troops. He moved west against Julianus but was forestalled by Septimius Severus who established himself in Rome. Having neutralized his other rival, Clodius Albinus, by offering him the rank of Caesar, Severus advanced against Niger and defeated him in three battles. Niger fled back to Syria but was killed near Antioch.
