Struck 96 A.D., Near EF, GREAT PORTRAIT! RSC 59, RIC 4, BMC 10, Sear/RCV 3025, (3.6 gm.).

Marcus Cocceius Nerva was born into a family of influence. His grandfather was Consul, and a member of Tiberius' inner circle. Nerva himself became friends with Emperors Nero and Vespasian, practiced law, and served as Consul with Domitian. When Domitian was assassinated, the Senate quickly chose Nerva as Emperor. He lavished public money - and his own funds - for public works, and benefited Rome no end by bypassing less-qualified candidates to choose the ablest man (Marcus Ulpius Trajanus) as his successor.
