AD 217-218. AE as (12.92 gm). ROMAN EMPIRE: Macrinus (AD 217-218). Copper as (12.92 gm). Rome, ca. January AD 218. IMP CAES M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right, seen from front, with medium to long beard / PONTIF MAX TR P II COS II P P S C, emperor, holding branch and eagle-tipped scepter, in quadriga left, crowned by Victory standing behind him. BMCRE 134. Cohen 107. RIC 152. Black patina. Extremely fine This type commemorates the consulship which Macrinus, still absent in Syria, assumed on 1 January 218. Since Macrinus previously had been granted only the consular ornaments, he decided to call this real consulship his first rather than his second. However, the mint at Rome only learned of this decision later, accordingly reverting from the unwanted COS II, as on this coin, to simple COS (see C. Clay, "Coinage of Macrinus," NZ 93, 1979, pp. 26-28). Estimated Value: $ 2,000 ...Lot was unsold. Gemini I Auction Closed Jan 11-12, 2005.
