From the Gemini IV Auction, Closed January 8, 2008. Lot # 460 Realized: US$200 Gordian III, Lot of 2 Rome-mint antoniniani with legend errors. (238-244 AD). 2 silver antoniniani (4.48 and 4.98 gm). Rome, 239-240 AD. Both coins have obverse legend IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG and belong to the end of the same issue that lasted from early in 239 until early in 240. Both show engraving errors, namely the omission of one or two letters from the reverse legend. The first coin has LIBERATAS AVG III instead of LIBERALITAS AVG III (LI omitted from LIBERALITAS), RIC 67 variety, no specimen with this error recorded in RIC. The second has ROMAE AETERNE instead of ROMAE AETERNAE (the second A omitted from AETERNAE), RIC 70 variety, a footnote records this error from our identical specimen, ex Trau Sale, lot 2644 (misprinted 2649 in RIC). Both coins seem to be the only recorded specimens with these errors. TWO COINS IN LOT. Good very fine. © 2005-2008 Gemini, LLC | Lot 460 sold for $200 [ $230, or approx 158.7 EUR, 117.3 GBP] Gemini Auctions' results, text and images are re-used by the kind permission of: Freeman & Sear (www.freemanandsear.com) and Harlan J Berk (www.harlanjberk.com)
