Description This piece was minted during the short reign of Geta, who ruled from 209-212 AD. Geta first served under his father Septimius Severus from 198-209 AD. Septimius Geta, the younger son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, was born in 189 AD. His praenomen was originally Lucius, but this was changed to Publius about 199. He was not elevated to the rank of Augustus until eleven years after Caracalla's advancement, and this was likely the root cause of the well known fraternal enmity that existed between them. This would lead eventually to Geta's assassination some 27 months after his elevation, which was followed by a mass persecution of his adherents, in which it is said some 20,000 people lost their lives. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Geta facing right, bearded, with legends P.SEPT.GETA.PIVS.AVG.BRIT. The reverse of this type features Janus standing front, holding long sceptre and thunderbolt, with legends TR.P.III.COS.II.P.P. Janus was the Roman god of doors, and of beginnings and endings. Of course, the month we know today as January was also named for Janus. His depiction in this manner on Roman Imperial Coinage is very uncommon. This example grades AEF, with bold devices and legends all around, and attractive original colour. It is even more attractive in hand than in the scan! A wonderfully preserved example of this very difficult type, catalogued as RSC-197a. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations.
