AD 253-268. AV medallion (24.65 gm). ROMAN EMPIRE. Gallienus (AD 253-268). Gold medallion (24.65 gm). Siscia, ca. AD 264. IMP GALLIENVS P F AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right, seen from front, floral decoration on right shoulderpiece / VIRTVS AVG, Gallienus, bare-headed, in military dress, cloak flying from shoulders, on horse springing left, about to hurl spear at bearded barbarian in German dress, who kneels before horse and raises both hands imploringly. Lanz 117, 24 November 2003, lot 1159 (this coin). Otherwise unpublished. Splendid new gold medallion of Gallienus, unknown before 2003 and evidently unique. Minor scape on forehead. Weakly struck in center of reverse. Choice extremely fine The same reverse type, though in mirror image, also appears with the same legend VIRTVS AVG on a unique Siscian antoninianus of Gallienus in Vienna (Göbl, MIR 36, pl. 103, 1406o). Other evidence for the production of medallions at Siscia at about this time includes bronze medallions from a single PAX AVG reverse die and two obverse dies (Göbl pl. 104, 1412nn and 1412oo), one of which is quite similar to the obverse die of this gold medallion. The Lanz catalogue conjectures that these medallions may have been distributed to the army on the occasion of a visit to Siscia by Gallienus himself in 264. Estimated Value: $ 110,000 ...Sold for $85,000 USD [ approx 64600 EUR, 45050 GBP ] plus 15% buyers fee. Gemini I Auction Closed Jan 11-12, 2005.
