Description SUPERB GALERIUS FOLLIS [Image] Galerius, as Augustus, 305-311AD; Follis Obv: GAL MAXIMIANVS PF AVG, Laureate bust of Galerius right Rev: GENIO IMPERATORIS, Genius standing left holding patera and cornucopiae, B in left field, MKV in exergue Galerius served as a soldier under the Emperors Aurelian and Probus before rising through the ranks to become a senior officer under Diocletian. He was ultimately named Caesar with Constantius I in 293 and married Diocletian's daughter, Galeria Valeria, divorcing his own wife to do so. Upon Diocletian and Maximianus abdicating, Galerius and Constantius were elevated to the purple. Maximinus was elevated, with Severus II, to Caesar and shortly after this Constantius I died at York. Severus was raised to Augustus and Constantius' son, Constantine I, was granted the rank of Caesar. Maxentius, son of Maximianus was angered by this new arrangement, expecting his own elevation, and raised himself to the purple. Galerius and Severus went to deal with the rebel but suffered defeats, Severus being killed in the process. Shortly after this Galerius declared his intention to abdicate but was suddenly struck down with illness and died 5 May 311. His area of influence included Illyricum and the Balkans, but he is also known for his defeat by and subsequent victory over the Persians, c.296-298. RIC Cyzicus 44 (Struck December 308-May 310), cf.
