                          GALERIUS: A.D. 305 - 311

 When Diocletian turned to reforming the State, he divided the Empire into
 two quadrants and appointed his Praetorian Prefect, Galerius, as a junior
     prince (a Caesar) to assist him by governing one of the quadrants.
    Diocletian maintained court at Nicomedia, Galerius at Thessalonica,
  Maximianus at Milan, and Constantius at Trier. Only the Senate remained
   at Rome. This new and revolutionary political system was known as the
                                "tetrarchy".
