Description *AUG* Galba Denarius [Image] Galba, AD 69. A silver denarius minted in Spain and attributed as RIC 21 (R2). Obverse: Laureate head right. Legend is IMP GALBA. Reverse: Hispania, draped, standing left holding corn-ears and poppy in one hand and shield and two spears in other. Legend is HISPANIA. History: SERVIVS SVLPICIVS GALBA was born in 3 BC to Gaius Sulpicius Galba, a former consul, and his first wife Mummia Achaica. Galba served as Governor of Aquitania, consul in 33, commander of the Rhine legions, and proconsul in Africa (44-45) before retiring. He was recalled by Nero in 60 to be Governor of Hispania Tarraconensis, and was still there in 68 when the Rhine legions revolted against Nero, and Galba joined the revolt. Nero committed suicide on June 9, 68, and Galba was proclaimed. He quickly alienated the army and people, and was killed by a coup of Otho and the Praetorians on January 15, 69. Condition: The coin is in nEF condition with a high profile portrait. Flan exhibits micro-porosity throughout the surfaces, still a very nice coin. ------------------------------------------------------------- Terms Payment to be made by cash, cashier's check, money order or personal check payable in U.S. funds.
