AD 193. AE 23 mm (4.28 gm).. ROMAN EMPIRE. Didius Julianus (AD 193). Bronze 23 mm (4.28 gm). Prusa ad Olympum, Bithynia. AVT K M DIDIOC-[IOVLI]ANOC AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right / PR-OV / CAEWN, six-columned temple, mint name in Greek across field and in exergue. Sear, Greek Imperial, 2107 with photo (BM specimen). Rec. gén. 67, pl. C, 17 (BM specimen). Extremely rare. Awkwardly shaped flan. About extremely fine Prusa was apparently the only provincial mint to strike coins for Julianus and his family, and the Recueil général knew only one specimen for Julianus himself, that in the BM. The elevation of Julianus in Rome caused the revolt of Pescennius Niger in Syria, but obviously there would have been a period of two or three weeks in Bithynia in mid-late April 193, between the announcement of Julianus' elevation and the arrival of news of Niger's revolt. This coin was struck within this very brief timeframe. Estimated Value: $ 1,500 ...Sold for $1,100 USD [ approx 836 EUR, 583 GBP ] plus 15% buyers fee. Gemini I Auction Closed Jan 11-12, 2005.
