Didius Julianus, Æ Sestertius, 18.7 grams. Obverse: IMP CAES M DID SEVER IVLIAN AVG, laureate head of Didius Julianus, as Augustus, facing right. Reverse: CONCORD MILIT S C, Concordia, personifying concord and harmony, stands holding a legionary eagle and standard, in an ironic appeal to the troops for their loyalty that was doomed to failure. Struck during his brief reign, May-June, 193 A.D. Uneven strike, but VF. RIC IV 14 (Rare), Sear/RCV #6075, page 433, valued by David Sear at $1,000 in VF. Marcus Didius Severus Julianus, scion of a prominent family was born in 133 A.D., and grew up in the household of Marcus Aurelius' mother. Such a childhood propelled him to success, as Praetor, legionary commander, governor, and Consul. He survived false accusations of conspiring against Commodus, and later served as Senator and Proconsul of Africa. When Pertinax was proclaimed Augustus after the assassination of Commodus, Didius went to Rome, and after the Praetorian Guard beheaded Pertinax, Didius engaged in a bidding war against Sulpicianus for the Throne of Rome, ultimately prevailing with a colossal bid of 25,000 sestertii per guard. Previous Emperors had distributed cash upon their accession, but none before had the audacity to [Image] offer money in advance, as a bribe. [Image] The Senate, intimidated by the Guard, confirmed the choice, but the people were disgusted by the manner by which their new Emperor was imposed on them. Other ambitious men (Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus, and Septimius Severus), with armies at their disposal, heard opportunity knocking. As Severus marched toward Rome, Didius frantically began building defenses, but his unpopularity with the public, combined with eroding support from the Praetorians, proved to be his undoing. The Senate, which had caved in, and elevated Didius to the purple only two months before, proclaimed Septimius as Emperor. This sealed the fate of the 56 year old Didius, who was executed in the palace, after a reign of only 66 days. NOTE TO BIDDERS: This Sesterz is from a collection that I put together for myself, and most coins in the collection are of better quality than what is available elsewhere these days.
