Crispina, AR Denarius, CRISPINA AVGVSTA, draped bust of Crispina, facing right. / Lighted altar, surrounded by DIS GENITABILIS (to the Dei Genitales, the gods of birth). Struck c. 180-183 A.D., among the second issue of denarii struck for Crispina, who had married Commodus in 177 A.D. Nice VF, rare! RIC III (Commodus) 281 (Rare), RSC 16, RCV 5999, BMC IV (Commodus) 39, (3.4 gm.). In theory, Bruttia Crispina married well, to Commodus, a mere sixteen years old, and newly made co-Emperor, with his father, Marcus Aurelius. Unfortunately for her, it was an arranged marriage, with the intent of producing children as heirs to the throne. Three years later, Commodus succeeded his father, and three years after that, after a plot against his life, Crispina met her doom. With absolute power, Commodus accused her of adultery, banished her to Capreae, and had her executed. He meted out the same punishment even to his own sister, Lucilla, for plotting against him.
