(cf. RSC 879, cf. RIC III 56, cf. BMC IV 103, (2.0 gm.).) Limes denarii take their name from the Roman word for frontier ("Limes"), and are considered to be necessity money, imitating real denarii of silver, and made by people on the Roman frontier, who needed coins to make change. The Roman authorities may have approved the practice, or simply looked the other way; no one knows for sure. This one is not in the best condition, but it is the only Limes denarius of Commodus that I have ever seen. Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before.
