Obverse: C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT; Bare head of Caligula left. Reverse: VESTA above S-C to left and right of Vesta, veiled and draped, seated left on ornamental throne, holding patera in right hand and long transverse spear in left hand. Condition: Near EF, Coin at auction is much, much better than picture. This coin has excellent smooth surfaces with a beautiful green patina. Both sides have excellent near perfect centering with the obverse having a full legend. Excellent strike on the legends with razor sharp high relief. Great portrait of Caligula and superb detail on Vesta. High relief strike being 3.4 mm thick! Almost no wear on the legends, either side, indicates the coin has not seen much circulation. The slight flatness on the high points above the ear and Vesta's leg is probably due more to the high relief dies and not wear. Small ding in front of nose is does not significantly detract. The ear is fully defined. Full facial features on Vesta, nice draping robes and throne decorations. You can even see Vesta's naval. This coin is a choice example of this issue. Valuation: Why Valuation? This coin has a great green patina and high relief which makes it a choice example of this issue. The most current price information is found in Sear Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, where it is valued at $160 in fine, $400 in VF and $1,200 in EF.
