                     ORC2626 Britannicus sestertius G

Britannicus, AE sestertius, (19.37g) Balkan Mint, c. 53-54 AD, [TI
CLAVDIV]S CAES[AR AVG F BRITANNICVS] Draped bust left. / Mars advancing
left, holding spear and shield, S C at sides. Vagi 643; RIC p. 130 (note);
Cohen 2; BMC (Claudius) 226 and (Titus) 360. G, rough brown tone, some
modest encrustations.

Cohen's attribution of this type to the reign of Titus, a boyhood friend of
Britannicus, is romantic. But the lack of mention of the death of the
prince, and stylistic connection to coins of Nero Caesar and Agrippina Jr.
from the Balkan Mint mean that this is an issue of about 54 AD.
