AR Denarius (16x17mm) (3.34 grams), VF. RSC 210, RIC 75a (Scarce), Spanish mint. Obv. CAESAR AVGVSTVS, bare head of Augustus right. Rev. OB CIVIS SERVATOS above and below oak wreath, its ties erect in center. The coin is of fairly bright metal, with a slightly frosty surface on the obverse, as well as a small flan cut on the reverse through the legend, and the coin is slightly bent by the cut. Legends are about 1/2 present, with the obverse legend mostly off the flan to the right, and the reverse legend off the flan on top. The reverse image is well struck and the portrait is very nice. Augustus was the adopted son of Julius Caesar, and after sharing power for a while with Mark Antony, a general of Caesar, he finally defeated this rival and became the sole leader of the Roman Empire, while preserving some of the outward appearances of the Roman Republic.
