Rarity R3 in RIC Obverse: Head of Augustus wearing oak wreath right; no legend; within beaded border. Reverse: Round shield inscribed CL.V flanked by two laurel branches (trees) CAESAR above, AVGVSTVS below S P Q R arranged around shield; all within linear border. Condition: Nice EF, Coin is much, much better than picture. Coin has great high relief portrait with deeply engraved die with sharp strike. Coin has medium toned silver surfaces which are lighter on the high points. Metal is very slightly porous with a few scuffs in the field behind Augustus. Neither is a significant detraction. Start of some insignificant die breaks on the reverse die near AVGVSTVS. Obverse centering is excellent, reverse has most of CAESAR off the flan to the top. Excellent high relief choice portrait and choice example of this coin. Valuation: Why valuation? Roman Imperial Coins rates this coin a R3; Vagi does not list it. Compare to similar types in CNG 50, lot 1384, where a good VF estimated at $600 sold for $850 + 10% = $935; in CNG 50, lot 1385, where a toned VF estimated at $200 sold for $300 + 10% = $330. The coin at auction has much less wear than either example. Notice that lots 1384 and 1385 have significant merging of the silver in the hair and oak wreath above the ear. The metal of the coin at auction seems to be better than lot 1385 and not as good as lot 1384. The reverses of lots 1384 and 1385 are centered better. In Sear, Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, it is valued at $400 in VF and $880 in EF. All in all, the coin at auction is a choice example of this rare issue. Size: 3.51 grams, die axis = 7.5, flan 2.2 mm thick, 18.8 mm in diameter. References: RIC 36a, R3; CBN 1333; BMCRE 354=BMCRR 4446; Sear Mill 1602.
