Browsing Roman Imperial Coins of Anthemius and Euphemia

Emperor of the Western Empire 467-472 AD. Anthemius, a capable general under Marcian and Leo I, was named emperor of the western empire in AD 467. Losses to the Visigoths in Gaul decreased his low popularity and caused a rift between Anthemius and Ricimer, the semi-barbaric general in the west. Ricimer marched against Rome to depose Anthemius. When Rome fell after a three-month siege in AD 472 Anthemius disguised himself as a beggar and tried to escape, but was identified, captured and executed in July 472.
Euphemia was Marcian's daughter. She and Anthemius had four sons and a daughter, Alypia, who married Ricimer. The sons played roles in the revolts against Leo and Zeno.
